Belize International Film Festival 2012

Belize International Film Festival 2012

Frances-Anne Solomon reminds us that the seventh edition of the Belize International Film Festival is on! The festival will open with a red carpet opening gala at the Bliss Centre in Belize City today (Friday, July 13). Opening night will feature three Belizean films, including for the first time, a full-length feature film, 2012, Kurse of Di Xtabai.(Directed by Matthew Klinck, “Kurse of Di Xtabai” is done completely in the Kriol language, and produced by ‘Make-Belize Films’.)

Sixty-four films made the cut to be showcased in the Festival, from an astonishing 120 entries submitted from countries like Trinidad & Tobago, USA, Brazil, Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Chile, which will all be screened at the Princess Cinemas from Saturday, July 14 to Monday, July 16.

Festival activities will include an audio-visual symposium at the House of Culture in Belize City on Monday, July 16. Film awards will be presented to the winners at an award ceremony at the House of Culture on Tuesday night, July 17.

The festival presents a perfect opportunity to view Belizean, regional and international movies, documentaries, narratives and music videos not normally seen by local audiences. This year’s submissions include narratives, feature length documentaries, short narratives and documentaries and short animations from 24 different nations.

Festival director Suzette Zaiden said, “For the first time ever, the festival has invited an international jury consisting of three renowned filmmakers: Caribbean filmmaker, Frances Anne Solomon; Central American filmmaker, Edgar Soberon Torchia; and Mexican filmmaker, Oscar Urrutia Lazo.”

Among the must-see films to be showcased will be “Espiral” by Jorge Perez Solano, a film about those who leave Mexico in search of their destiny and those who stay behind to shape it. From Cuba comes “Ticket to Paradise”, a film about a young couple’s search for paradise on the road to Havana; and “Habanastation” by Cuban director Ian Padron.

From Jamaica come trio of films about our neighbors across the sea: “Ghett’a Life”, “Out of the Gate”, and “Akwantu: The Journey” about Jamaica’s maroon community directed by Roy T. Anderson.

The festival also included a number of entertaining short films.
